In October 2010, we launched McStorytellers, a website dedicated to showcasing the work of Scottish-connected short story writers. A year later, our little site provides free access to close to 200 stories by three dozen McStorytellers. To celebrate our first birthday, we’re delighted to publish The McCollection, our maiden anthology. Since the theme of the anthology is Scottishness, we’ve picked out twenty stories that in our mind are quintessentially Scottish. Each piece selected either is emotive (our McStorytellers aren’t afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves) or it’s powerfully written, with no holds barred, or it’s underpinned by wry Scots humour. It might even demonstrate a combination of all three qualities. But see for yourself. And enjoy a roller-coaster ride through the Scottish writing psyche.

FIrst things first - I'm biased, because I wrote one of the stories. but if you want a collection of 20 different stories then this is a good place to start
This is an outstanding collection of short stories selected from hundreds that have been published online by mcstorytellers.com. There is great variety in the collection but they are held together by an indefinable 'Scottishness' with large helpings of that stoical acceptance and ready wit that characterises the race.
Whatever else you may do buy this book and enjoy the all too brief pleasure it affords.
I am astounded this collection of stories got so many 5 stars!
The first story, called A Glaswegian God, by Tom Greenwood could only be described as a stupid waste of time and space.
The second story, called Bite, by Pat Black started as a conversation between a father and son discussing seeing pubic hair on the first girl to get killed in the movie Jaws. From there it continued downward with the use of the F word, and the Lord's name used as a swear word. Needless to says, that is where I stopped reading. Surely there's enough trash out there already, to go around.
OK, a confession to start with. The collection contains one of my stories. But my remarks apply not to mine but to the other contributions. I don't understand why some people say the short story form is dead. Surely with attention spans shortening even further, it's the perfect read. On the other hand, there are lots of writers whose short stories can only lay claim to the label because they just wrote for a few pages, then stopped. This collection shows the versatility of the form in the hands of writers who understand its flexibility and adaptability for a variety of subjects, treatments, responses and emotions. There are laughs, tears, quirks, puzzles, relationships, and a cultural mix that nonetheless has a clear Scottish slant. A great wee collection.
Great book of short story's. Well worth the money and an enjoyable read. Good value for the price.

I haven't had time to finish all the stories, but the first few in the book were definitely fun to read. Reading good short stories is like eating peanuts - always want one more and so far the book is providing a good supply.
